Vancouver: Perspectives in Paint
WHAT: An art opening featuring 20 artists including Kate MacDonald
WHERE: Yaletown Gallery
WHEN: Opening Reception: Thur, April 3 at 7 pm
(Show runs April 3 – April 15)
My friend Ron Coldham wrote this press release ahead of another show of mine and I like pulling it out every now and again - he's got a way with words doesn't he?
"The skyline changes in this city every 2.7 days. It’s a documented fact. Condos go up. Landmarks come down. There are more cranes than seagulls on the waterfront.
Let’s preserve what we have before our cityscape is void of any personality. And how you ask? By fighting city hall? Taking it to the streets? Greasing the wheels?
Fuck that. We know by now that none of that works. The only way to preserve the character of our eclectic cityscape is through the art of conservationists like artist Kate MacDonald. Check out her artwork and transport yourself back in time – at least 2.7 days in time – to an era when your skyline looked a little more, you know, like your skyline.
Let’s talk about it more at the opening."
I'll be hitting Rodney's Oyster Bar on Mainland apres-opening if anyone wants to join me for kumimotos and beer! (I heart those little kumis....) Can't make the show? You can always view new work on my website!

CANVAS GALLERY OPENING NIGHT
Who had as much fun as me last night? Maybe nobody, but I know a few of you got close! It's always great to meet fellow artists, see old friends, and be surprised by who you forgot to invite (but found the party anyway!) Sommelier buddy, Tracey Robertson kept me busy working the room, but there were still plenty of bottles of grolsch that found their way to me.
If you get a chance to make it down to the gallery (show runs until March 11 at Canvas Gallery - 91 Powell St) be sure to checkout Joshua Van Dyke's powerful sculptures/masks made from reclaimed skateboards. You should see them in person to appreciate their ingenuity (even the trucks have been used to mount them) but there are some images available on his website in The Hunt collection.
(And damn, who was that girl in the gold lame shorts jumping rope in the stairwell all night long?)
PS. Sold the W Viaduct lightbox, but there are 20 in the series so you have 19 more chances to own it!

(And if you'd like to start before 7, I'll be at the back of the Heather from 5 or so on....)
CANVAS Gallery has partnered up the Heart and Stroke Foundation and will be accepting cash donations on the night of the Opening and I have it on good authority that Grolsch will be on hand to share a pint or two.

GASOLINE ROMANCE SHOW INSTALLED
A long day of work followed by an evening at CANVAS Gallery (and a few Guinness at the Heather for sustenance) and I'm happy to report that my artwork is hanging and ready for Gasoline Romance (January 19 - March 11 in Gastown at the Canvas Gallery on Powell Street.)
With Dan's help and the excellent eye (she chose me, didn't she?) of gallery curator, Samantha Anderson, we made quick work of it, although I've got to admit that installing the lightboxes in relation to available outlets is always a pain. (Luckily, ahead of the Woodwards Show I stumbled across some extension cords that run 3 outlets along 10 feet at 3 foot intervals. Lord knows what they make them for, but they work for me!) For those of you who wander in, the paintings are hung along the second level and the lightboxes on the first.
I'll pass along the date of the Opening Reception as soon as it's been confirmed, so stay tuned!

Video from Death Penalty Art Show - Gallery Lombardi
Recently added to youtube, the video embedded below is of Gallery Lombardi's Michelle Latis discussing the Justice For All? Death Penalty Art Show in May 2006. While she doesn't specifically discuss my painting Last Meal:Ruben Cantu, it still gets plenty of camera time.
